It is a beautiful part of Scotland, with a rolling coastline of rocks and sandy beaches and further inland, acres of forest and green space. There are some stunning castles to explore around here, and whether you are a history lover or not, you cannot help be impressed by some of these Scottish fortresses.  The fairytale Caelaverock Castle in Dumfries is a stunning example of a medieval stronghold, surrounded by a moat and a twin gatehouse.  It is great to explore around and kids will love the castle themed adventure park.  Threave Castle is a large tower structure situated on an island on the River Dee and is only accessible by boat.  If you'd rather a fully intact castle then take a day trip to Drumlanrig, a beautiful 17th century castle with a lavish interior.  This is a full day out affair; you can explore inside the castle (it has 120 rooms, 17 turrets and 4 towers) or around the 90,000 acre estate - every effort has been made to make sure you have fun!  You can go on a ranger-led wildlife walk, try salmon fishing, go mountain biking or just run wild at the adventure playground, there is masses to do here for everyone.  There are many other family friendly parks and attractions across the district, Mabie Farm Park, Dino Park, Cream O'Galloway and Dalscombe farm, just to name a few.  You will never be short of things to do with all the family if you plan a holiday here.   When you come to Scotland, make sure you include Dumfries and Galloway in your visit!
