# Fort William

> Fort William - the home of Britain highest mountain, Ben Nevis - is surrounded by some of the most spectacular scenery in Britain.  It is one of the those places where photos don't really do it justice, because the actual experience of being there is so much more exhilarating than a picture can ever capture.  Over the top?  Well, visit and see for yourself. Firstly, Ben Nevis.  It's a hard climb, taking around 8 hours, and is for experienced walkers only.  The weather can be notoriously changeable too which creates added problems.  If you are thinking about it, do careful research and take no risks.   If - like me - you want to stride purposefully around the area, looking the part with a backpack, have a nice lunch out and be back safely by tea time, then there are plenty of lovely walking trails that you can take the kids on and don't involve crampons.  This area - Lochaber - encompasses both Fort William and the picturesque village of Glencoe (which is located between Loch Leven and the mouth of the glen) and the scenery is stunning. Lochaber is also known for one of the worlds most famous train journeys; the Jacobite Stream train played the role of the Hogwarts Express in the Harry Potter films.  Hop on at Fort William and ride all the way to Mallaig for some stunning "train views", the highlight being the Glenfinnan Viaduct crossing, the famous bridge on route to Hogwarts.  In addition to the viaduct, the Jacobite train also runs past Ben Nevis, Loch Morar (the deepest freshwater loch in Britain) and Loch Nevis (the deepest saltwater loch), so it is well worth a trip.
