> Located in the centre of England, the city Nottingham is known as "The Queen of the Midlands", in part because of its attractive wide streets and several pretty green spaces such as the Arboretum, Embankment and Colwick Park.  It is a great location to explore Sherwood Forest and find out all about the legend of Robin Hood; you can delve into Nottinghams history and learn all about the famous hero/outlaw on various tours of the cities famous landmarks. Nottingham Castle looks down over the city from Castle Rock and has fantastic view of the town.  Originally destroyed in 1651 after the Civil war, it was rebuilt again in 1674 in the style of an Italian Palace.  In 1875 it was converted into a museum and art gallery.  Today it contains some fantastic art collections - including a set of bronze statues of Robin and the full Merry Men troupe by sculptor James Woodford - and also tells the history of Nottingham through displays and a fascinating cave tour down into the passages and tunnels beneath the building. While staying in Nottingham, be sure to take a trip to Wollaton Park, a 500 acre park which is home to deer and the extraordinary Wollaton Hall, built in the 1580's.  The Hall itself is now the location of the Natural History Museum of Nottingham, and the Nottingham Industrial Museum is in the stable block.  They have some really super events here too and if you visit at Christmastime, make sure to book in to see the fabulous light spectacle set up around the Hall and gardens. Talking of Christmas, if you are here over winter there is a beautiful Christmas market on every year in the very sizeable main square.  It is not just any old Christmas market here but a full-on German affair with over 70 Bavarian-style stalls and others selling local cheeses, chocolates, jewellery and handmade gifts.  There is also an ice rink, toboggan slides and loads of other rides for all the family to enjoy.  And - whoop!- there is a mobile ice bar (the UK's biggest) to serve you a quick shot of something if you feel the need. A great place to visit at any time of year (but my goodness Christmas there sounds pretty awesome) so make sure you take the family to explore Nottingham and all its great attractions.
