> The Scottish Boarders lie just inside Scotland, north of Northumberland and south of Edinburgh.  A lovely route to enter Scotland from the UK is by crossing the at Carter Bar and from here you will be rewarded with magnificent views across the Scottish Borders.  The landscape varies across the Borders; in the west there are rolling hills and beautiful lochs whereas in the East, on the North Sea coast, you can find some stunning places such as the seaside village of St Abbs and the fishing village of Cove.  The River Tweed crosses the whole of the Borders until it flows into the sea at Berwick upon Tweed and along the riverbanks you can find the pretty villages of Peebles, Innerleithen and Melrose. If you love history and crumbling ruins, or even if you don't, make sure you visit Jedburgh Abbey, a magnificent 12th Century ruin, still pretty well intact.  The Scottish Borders was once the home of the Christian monks who lived in this magnificent Abbey and others like it; if you found Jedburgh Abbey fascinating then there are three more to visit not far from each other; Dryburgh, Melrose and Kelso.   While in Jedburgh, take a trip to the castle jail and museum, which gives visitors a taste of what life was life in a 1820's prison with tours through the original cell blocks.  Or, over near Melrose and on the banks of the River Tweed, explore Abbotsford, the former home of novelist Sir Walter Scott.  Kids will love visiting Traquair, Scotlands oldest inhabited house.  Here they can explore the beautiful grounds, get lost in the maze and have fun on the adventure playground.  The house often hosts events specifically for children (like a huge egg hunt at Easter!) so keep an eye out for what is on when you visit. The Scottish Borders have so much to offer for a family break and there is masses to see and do.  Don't head straight to the Highlands when you holiday in Scotland....stop off here and discover the Lowlands too!
