> Up until quite recently, Sheffield was known as the City of Steel - pretty much every knife fork and spoon came from here, and it was famed for its industry and innovation.  These days, the smoking chimneys of industry have gone and Sheffield is a green and modern city, set among the stunning background of the Peak District National Park.  You will find fantastic restaurants and bars, live music, an array of festivals, exhibitions and street art and all manor of things that make a City visit so exciting. In town, there are a couple of museums that are worth a visit to further understand Sheffield's history.  The Kelham Island Museum sitting on the River Don houses exhibitions about science and industry in Sheffield and you can find out more about the city's art and culture heritage at the Millennium Museum.  There are some fantastic artworks displayed here.  Kids will also enjoy a trip out to the Magna Science Adventure centre if you are visiting the nearby town of Rotherham.   A bit further out of town you have the glorious Peak District National Park, with fantastic walking, cycling and general good-old Enid Blyton fresh air and fun.  The ruins of Peveril Castle lie in the middle of the Park and are worth exploring, or go subterranean and visit The Peak Cavern (it has another name but it's too rude to write here)- a series of caves formed from the old lead mining days.  There are fully guided tours available; don't miss out on the incredible boat ride 450m underground to the Bottomless Pit and discover what life was like for the miners working in the 18th Century. With a great location for exploring the county of South Yorkshire, make sure you stop off in this vibrant city.
