# Stirling, Eastern Scotland, UK

> Stirling is a small and spectacular city in central Scotland with lots to see and do. It has a rich medieval history meaning - of course - a beautiful castle, and they don't come more grand than Stirling Castle, one of Scotlands largest and most important Castles - both historically and architecturally. In its day, it was the favourite residence of Stewart Kings and Queens with its stunning gardens and superb sculptures. Today, the castle is brought to life by wonderful performers in the roles of servants and courtiers who will guide you through details of the characters living there in the 16th century. Visit the National Wallace Monument, which was built in 1869 to commemorate Sir William Wallace, the 13th Century Scottish hero who fought for Scottish independence. Who can forget Mel Gibson with his blue face, bellowing around the Scottish Hills at the Battle of Stirling bridge in the film Braveheart? Well that's him. The beautiful monument is a one of the city's most distinctive landmarks and has breathtaking views overlooking the very Stirling bridge where they battled in 1297. For a more macabre history trip, visit the Stirling Old Town jail where the past is - once again brought to life by the brilliant Performance Tours on offer. There is an Observation Tower here with wonderful views across the old town to the Castle. And children and adults alike will love a trip to the nearby National Trust for the Battle of Bannockburn experience. Follow in the footsteps of Robert the Bruce and Edward II and into the 1314 with a digitally recreated version of the bloody battle including amazing, immersive 3D scenes. Don't miss this!
