# Stonehaven

> Stonehaven is a pretty harbour town, half an hours drive south of Aberdeen, so great for a day trip from here or a stop off while exploring the east coast.  Many people come here to see the stunning ruins of Dunnottar Castle, perched on a rocky headland overlooking the North Sea.  This dramatic cliff-top fortress was once home to one of the most powerful families in Scotland and has a rich history.  It is tricky to get to, with a steep, narrow path of 200 steps and a tunnel, so bear this in mind if you are visiting.   There are plenty of places to stay in Stonehaven and a wide choice of pubs and restaurants.  For things to do in town, check out the Stonehaven Tolbooth Museum or hire a paddleboard and take a tour up the coast (all the way to the castle if you can make it!).  Boat trips will also take tours up here if your arms are tired from holding ice creams all day.  There is also a large, open air, seawater (heated, woo hoo!) pool and lots of exploring adventures to be had in the nearby Dunnottar woods.
