# Suffolk, East Anglia, UK > Suffolk is an idyllic and endearingly remote county which has a huge amount to offer for a family holiday. From the picturesque seaside resorts of Southwold, Dunwich and Aldeburgh, to the countless rural towns and villages and larger market towns of Beccles and Bury St Edmonds, this county has a host of interesting things to see and do. The sandy beaches of Southwold are a firm family favourite with the gorgeously eccentric Pier crammed with fabulous cafes, vintage coin machines and shows and trails on offer. This gem of a town is well worth a visit with its beautiful painted seaside cottages and inns. There is a working lighthouse here too which you can stop in at and even climb to the top - if you can handle the 92 steps up to the platform! Aside from exploring the villages and beaches, Suffolk also has some great family attractions. For thrill seekers have a day out at Pleasurewood Hills Theme Park near Lowestoft. For nature lovers, visit the Earnsham Wetlands Centre which amongst other things is the headquarters for The Otter Trust (which has saved otters from near extinction) and homes the largest collection of otters in natural enclosures in the world! Here you can also see rare breed sheep, goats, deer and horses and there are often activites on during the year like art trails, workshops and guided walks. There are picnic tables, a cafe and a farm shop, so it is a great day out for families. Framlingham Castle near Ipswich is an estate built in the 1100's and is in fantastic condition and well worth a tour around. You can walk all around the castle walls, which, up at 10 metres high, produces stunning views across the surrounding countryside. There are lots of hands on activities, dressing up boxes and a family trail around the defences so it makes for a really fun family day out. Ickworth Castle near Bury is a National Trust property and has stunning gardens with lots to see and do so this is also worth a visit, although check on opening times as in Winter they vary. With lots on throughout the year and plenty of great accommodation and things to see, Suffolk is a great choice for a family holiday.
