> Situated to the east of London and only 35 minutes from the city centre, Thurrock is home to 18 miles or gorgeous river front and - although known for its growth and regeneration - still remains full of lovely green open spaces.  If you are visiting Thurrock, there are lots of parks here such as Thurrock Thameside Nature Park, Chafford Gorges Nature Park, RSPC at Rainham Marshes and Davy Down. Thurrock is also home to one of the UK's biggest shopping centres - the mighty Lakeside - which, together with Lakeside retail park is one of the largest retail areas in Europe.  So if you need to buy anything at all, chances are it is here!   There is also some history to discover in Thurrock.  Tilbury Fort - located on the Thames estuary - has been defending London from as early as the 16th Century, right up to the Second World War.  Henry VIII built the fort and it remains in excellent condition today; it is a brilliant family day out and you can explore the circular moats, the magazine houses used to store gunpowder and see what it was like for the soldiers who lived here and defended London.  Also located nearby is the Green Flag rated Coalhouse Fort, built to protect the Thames estuary and is a lovely day out with open green spaces to explore and some lovely riverside walks to take. With a host of accommodation available to suit all budgets, Thurrock is a great place to visit.
