> Just down the road from Weymouth, the Isle of Portland is the most southerly point on the Jurassic Coast.  It is joined to the mainland by a dramatic sweeping arch of sand and the remote location and stunning scenery make it an explorers paradise.   Immersed in Maritime history there are museums and castles to discover, not to mention the creepy pirate graves hidden at the stunning Church Ope Cove.  The castle, at the top of the island is well worth a visit and boasts magnificent views across the island and Chesil beach below. The rugged coastline attracts many sports enthusiasts, with rock-climbing, abseiling, diving, sailing and kite surfing all on offer here.  The South West coast path is a fantastic trail around the island by bike or on foot. Portland Bill lighthouse runs guided tours and has a visitor centre (in the former lighthouse keepers quarters) and a cafe.  For the energetic, it is possible to climb the 153 steps to the top of the lighthouse to enjoy the breathtaking views. Portland is famous for its stone and quarrying still continues on the island.  Some disused quarries have now become nature reserves; the best example of this is Tout Quarry which has been turned into a Stone Sculpture park and has over 60 sculptures. With great places to eat out along the beach and plenty to do, Portland is a fantastic, family friendly town and well worth a visit.
