Pendeen Rovers Football Club

pendeen Rovers AFC originally started life as Pendeen United formed in 1920. Previous to this teams from surrounding villages, Pendeen, Botallack and Trewellard had formed to play one another occasionally across the parishes of Pendeen and Morvah, with no formal league system in place. Pendeen United Football Club became founder members of the West Penwith League, their colours then were green and yellow and this club continued until they withdrew from the WPL and folded at the end of the 1931/32 season. It was the following year in October 1933 that Pendeen Rovers Association Football Club that we all know was formed and entered the WPL. Drawing players from the surrounding areas of Botallack, Trewellard and St Just, the Rovers finished runners up to Mousehole in their first season of 1934/35. It wasn’t long however before the club saw its first major success in the 1935/36 season, winning the West Penwith League & Hanneford Cup with the squad shown here in this photograph. The Rovers soon established themselves, and in 1936 Pendeen played Lizard at home in a charity cup, drawing in excess of 200 spectators! Then going on to win the WPL and Hanneford cup again in 1938/39 before the war years intervened. Apart from these years 1940-1945 Pendeen Rovers have been in continuous existence ever since.
