Inside, it is a treasure house of delights, including medieval woodwork, amazing Victorian wall paintings and stained glass. The collection of carved medieval misericords is particularly fine – these little ledges, for people to rest on during long prayers, are decorated with fantastical carved creatures. Look out for one of a stern-faced mermaid suckling a lion and a two-headed beast with ferocious claws.
