Pen y Bont Touring and Camping Park is located in the breathtaking Snowdonia National Park near Bala, North Wales. It is a peaceful, attractive site with views of the Berwyn mountains and just 100 yards from Bala Lake, the largest natural lake in Wales. Its enviable location makes it an awesome base for adventuring around the Snowdonia National Park and for a multitude of outdoor pursuits.

Pen y Bont consistently gets rave reviews from campers who have stayed here, and it is not difficult to see what people love about it. Aside from the epic location, it’s a super friendly and relaxed campsite with plenty of room over the six landscaped acres for tents, motorhomes, caravans and campervans, on a variety of hard and grass pitches. They now offer glamping in the shape of a shepherds hut and two Gypsey Romany Caravans (based on the original Gaskin caravan design, no less) and the lucky glampers also get some rather lovely exclusive extras in the new “Gelli” Glamping area: an al fresco kitchen area and a BBQ hut. The communal facilities are excellent - a good shower and toilet block of course, but the best bit for me is the food situation. I’m not a “Pot Noodle and run” kind of camper, I like eating well when I go on holiday, and here you can do this, with the help of daily meat deliveries (except Sundays) from the excellent local butcher. The onsite shop provides other essentials such as bread, milk, free- range eggs and local cheese, meaning that you don’t have to stagger in with a full supermarket shop when you arrive. Bliss.

Nearby (very - it’s a 5 minute walk) you have the lovely historic town of Bala which offers the chance to hop aboard the Bala Lake railway, a mini steam train which takes its passengers on a delightful 9 mile return journey alongside Bala Lake through Snowdonia National Park, showing off the lake and surrounding scenery including the nearby Mountain of Arenig Fawr, Aran Benllyn and Aran Fawddwy.

Train journey in the bag, it’s time to get serious about some of the outdoor pursuits on offer. Choose whether to go low, medium or high on the extreme sports front. There are many excellent walks and cycle routes for all abilities and this is a great way of exploring the Snowdonia National Park. Pistyll Rhaeadr - the highest waterfall in Wales - is 20 miles away if you fancy a day trip. For watersports, head to Bala Lake and try one of the many activities on offer such as sailing, kayaking, raft building, gorge walking and windsurfing. And if you’re feeling bullish, the National White Water Centre is just a few miles down the road, offering some serious white water fun for those who are strong of stomach.
