The campsite, tucked away down a pretty country lane, is **adults only**, and you can be sure of a true retreat here and a chance to sit and listen to birdsong, read a book or simply watch the world go by. It is a dog walker’s paradise and there are plenty of leisurely walks through the surrounding countryside - either along the nearby river or through the fields - and lots of good cycling routes too. Originally built as a giant fortress by the Romans and invaded by the Vikings centuries later, every part of history has left an imprint on the cobbled streets, with gems such as the medieval Shambles (the inspiration for Diagon Alley for Harry Potter fans), the majestic York Minster, ghost walks down some of the most haunted streets in Britain, a huge choice of modern, interactive and ground breaking museums such as the Jorvik museum, National Railway museum, the chocolate museum (Terrys and Rowntrees both originated here) and lots more. The city centre of York is surrounded by the original and beautifully preserved medieval walls, and these are free to walk around on foot. With such a huge amount to see both in York and the surrounding countryside of North Yorkshire, you might want to take a few days over it, so make this a proper holiday.
