A Swallows and Amazons experience awaits you here at Bank House Farm campsite, situated in the hamlet of Hulme End on the Staffordshire/Derbyshire Peak District border and surrounded by rolling green hills and ancient dry stone walls. It is idyllic countryside and Bank House Farm makes the absolute most of its location, with all pitches treated to stunning views across the Manifold Valley and some spots on the campsite opening right onto the River Manifold, which runs right through. Kids will spend hours here messing about on the river banks, and fly fishers are allowed to have a go, although on a strictly catch and return basis only. Bank House Farm is in the grounds of a Victorian farmhouse and the feel here is stepping away from the stresses of modern life and escaping into the wilderness. The campsite, in ten acres overlooking the glorious Derbyshire countryside, is a quiet, chilled out affair, with bike and walking trails close by and an abundance of wildlife to spot around the water or in nearby woodland. It has grass and hard standing pitches so it is good for both tent campers and those with larger vehicles, and you can choose one of the marked pitches in the main field or head to one of the adjacent riverside fields for a more wild camping experience. The facilities onsite (brand new in 2020) are spotless, with underfloor heating in the showers and toilets, a washing up area, a motorhome service point and chemical waste disposal. You can’t get too excited about toilet blocks of course, but this one won a Platinum Award from ‘Loo of the Year’ in 2020, so it really does have something to shout about. The surrounding area is all about exploring the delightful Peak District; the idyllic villages, quaint market towns, historic houses and gardens - including Chatsworth - and beauty spots like Dovedale Valley and Monsal Dale. The Manifold Valley is home to some seriously fun days out for all ages including the excitingly named Heights of Abraham; a hilltop park set on top of a limestone gorge, which you can reach by travelling up an Alpine style cable car. For thrill seekers, Alton Towers is only 25 minutes away and has rides and attractions to suit everyone, including the world’s first 14 loop rollercoaster. Gulp. For a different kind of ride, how about hiring a bike and cycling the enjoyable (and not too strenuous) nine miles along the Manifold Trail - the old route of the disused Leek and Manifold light railway - which takes you through Manifold and Hamps Valleys to Waterhouses. You can visit the 50,000 year old Thor’s Cave on the way and there is a good tea room at Wetton Mill if you want to break the journey. After a day of walking or pedalling then there is nowhere more peaceful to sit, relax and put your feet up than back at Bank House Farm. Hulme End itself is mostly cottages and farm buildings but it does have an excellent pub - the Manifold Inn - which is cosy, serves great food, and is within 100 metres of Bank House Farm if you fancy a night off the cooking. A fantastic place for a relaxing holiday in a blissful part of the Peak District.
