Derby is a city located right in the centre of England, with both the Derbyshire Dales and the stunning Peak District in close proximity; so a great base to explore, hike and bike around this gorgeous part of the world. The River Derwent runs thorough the centre of Derby, and this riverside city - which began life as a small market town - has grown in size and prominence, largely due to the Industrial Revolution when it became a major player in the manufacturer of silk and porcelain. Derby is well known as one of the Midlands most lively destinations, with some great historical things to explore; Derby Cathedral (now home to a family of Peregrine Falcons), Derby Museum and Art Gallery or take a trip to the Royal Crown Derby which is well known for its fine bone china. If it's shopping you want then head down to Derby's Cathedral Quarter with over 500 business including designer goods, well known shopping brands, independent shops and great cafes and bars. Or visit Derby Market Hall where you can shop for all sorts of local fare, from fish and meat and local beers, to handmade crafts and vintage clothing. Further out of the city, explore some National Trust properties: Calke Abbey, Kedleston Hall and Sudbury Hall or the grounds of Elvaston Castle.
