The number of heritage buildings still standing proudly across the UK is quite remarkable. Most of the UK's stately homes have hosted kings and queens, prime ministers, actors and poets – all manner of illustrious guests. Why not visit Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire which was built for John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough and  explore 2,000 acres of gardens. It’s no wonder UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site in 1987. Or Highclere Castle,  the backdrop to so many scenes of the Crawley family and their household in Downton Abbey!  Maybe Chatsworth takes your fancy? Better known to many as Pemberley in the 2005 film adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, starring Keira Knightley. Don't forget Longleat House in Wiltshire, and make a day of it visiting the incredible Longleat Safari Park!  Stately homes frequently provide tours throughout the day as well as audio guides and information packs. Of course, let's not forget the children! There are a huge number of zoos, wildlife and safari parks all over the UK and most are well worth a visit and provide a really exciting and unique day out.  The broad difference between them is that Zoos tend to keep animals with their own species in smaller enclosures for a real up-close encounter, whereas a visit to a Safari Park usually involves driving around much larger enclosures to see groups of animals - maybe rhino, giraffe and gazelle all in one setting.  Some are self-drive (for a monkey snapping off your wing mirror type affair) or in others you are guided round in a truck, spotting lions and elephants from afar - similar to an African safari, just without the plus-size sunset, hot weather and flamboyant tribespeople (although lets not get too picky about this; most UK safari parks are just a couple of hours from home and do not involve remortgaging the house to go). Many zoos and parks now are great conservation pioneers and animal rescue centres, so by visiting, you are often contributing to real global issues, supporting endangered species or deforestation or other genuine threats to wildlife.  The parks usually have lots of information about these causes and it can be a great way to get the kids to learn about the world we live in, the animals from different continents and the dangers they face.

Zoos, Wildlife Parks and Safari Parks

Falkirk is a town located between Edinburgh and Glasgow and South-east of Stirling and is a great place to visit - full of great things to see and do with the kids.  As are many Scottish towns, it is bursting with history, but it also has some fantastic modern attractions - many of which you won't have seen the like before! The Falkirk wheel is the only one of its kind in the world; a rotating boat lift which can transport boats 115 feet between the various levels of the Union, Forth and Clyde Canals. You can take a ride on the wheel to get up close to this engineering masterpiece. The canal also offers various boat trips which is a fun way of seeing around.  If you don't want to see the area from the water, hire a bike or even a segway for a different type of tour! Falkirk also has a superb parkland area called The Helix; activities on offer here include cycling, watersports, an adventure playground and lots more.  The best attraction however is the worlds largest horse sculptures - the Kelpies.  They are 30 metre high horse heads, made from an incredible 300 tonnes of steel, and these giants stand as a tribute to the vital role that horses played in early Scottish Industry.  Tours are available to get close to and even inside the structures. Historically, Falkirk doesn't disappoint.  The Antoine Wall, built by the Romans around 142 AD was a high stone fortification 3 or 4 metres high, and was designed to show their power and authority.  It is now a World Heritage Site and you can visit certain areas of the wall that still exist in various places; the walking routes are easy going and kids will really enjoy exploring the ramparts and the remains of forts and boathouses.  In the nearby Callendar House, you can experience life gone by and visit the displays retelling the story of the Antoine Wall. Or how about a visit to Blackness Castle - the 15th Century fortress located on the South shore of the Firth of Forth.  It is a stunning place and has been used over the years as a royal Castle, a Prison and more recently as a film location; for Hamlet (the Mel Gibson one), BBC's Ivanhoe and the TV series Outlander. For the trainee wizards in the family, a trip to the School of Witchcraft and Potions is a must.   Create your own potions from hundreds of ingredients and be taught spells and wand movements from the Potions masters!   Or for something else completely different, how about another of Falkirk's top attractions - the Divergent Escape Rooms!   Crack the puzzles in order to beat the clock and escape.  Another fantastic immersive experience. Lots to do for the family in Falkirk, make sure you leave a few days to explore all this town has to offer!
