Southampton is a port on Englands south coast and a great place to go with the family. The port itself is very busy and a great place to watch large cruise ships and cargo boats come and go. The Hythe Ferry service runs regularly from here across The Solent, the 20 mile strait separating the mainland from the Isle of Wight.
The city is also well known for being the departure point for the ill-fated Titanic in 1912. The SeaCity Museum has (among lots of other things) some fantastic interactive experiences, giving you a real sense of stepping back in time; while the model of the Titanic itself lets you take a closer look at this majestic vessel.
Ocean Village is Southamptons very busy marina and has plenty of beautiful private yachts and cruise ships to ogle at. Wandering around you will find some fantastic waterside restaurants and shops - some of the best Southampton have to offer.
Nature lovers can wander away from the crowds to the 326-acre Southampton Common or head to nearby Itchen Valley country park, which has two fantastic play areas for younger children and the brilliant Go Ape high ropes course for older kids and adults.
Southampton is well worth a visit in its own right but if you are taking a staycation along the south coast don't miss out this vibrant city.
