Stonehaven is a pretty harbour town, half an hours drive south of Aberdeen, so great for a day trip from here or a stop off while exploring the east coast. Many people come here to see the stunning ruins of Dunnottar Castle, perched on a rocky headland overlooking the North Sea. This dramatic cliff-top fortress was once home to one of the most powerful families in Scotland and has a rich history. It is tricky to get to, with a steep, narrow path of 200 steps and a tunnel, so bear this in mind if you are visiting.
