Designed by acclaimed local architect James Pearson Alison FRIBA and dating from 1888, Balcary House Hotel sits in around 3½ acres of mature private grounds. Originally costing £3,320 9s 1d, Balcary was built as a 17 bedroom mansion for local mill owners the Laing family. In the 1940's it opened as a residential care home, primarily catering for children from bombed cities north & south of the border. In August 2016, we were delighted to host a reunion for former Barnardos residents.

Prior to us purchasing the building in 2015, it was a christian conference centre and since aquiring the property, we've been working tirelessly to improve, upgrade and decorate the accommodation to the highest standards, ensuring it meets the needs of hotel guests today.

Today the Hotel boasts 9 comfortable rooms/suites accessed from a grand staircase with stunning stained glass window. Accommodation comprises a Honeymoon Suite, Super King bedrooms with super-king zip & link beds, a family suite and easy access suite for less able guests.

In addition to sleeping accommodation, the hotel offers numerous reception rooms and a relaxed bar area, perfect for business meetings, family reunions and a range of other functions. For larger weddings, the extensive landscaped grounds provide the ideal location for a marquee catering for up to around 200 guests.

Situated in a quiet area on the south side of the town, Balcary House Hotel is less than half a mile from Hawick Town Centre occupying an elevated position with westerly views overlooking the River Teviot and Wilton Lodge Park.

Sleep and break fast is provided together with light refreshments during the day. Teas can be scheduled and generally are provided between 2 and 5 pm afternoon. The 3.5 acres are a tranquil setting opposite wilton park and ideal for a rest that is relaxing.

We are the Millars. We took over West Bastlebog in 2018 and are in the process of restocking the farm. It is a small farm of just over 50 acres and such is the way with scale and farming these days, we farm on a part-time basis. We are registered with the Scottish Organic Producers Association (SOPA) and our land is certified organic.

However we are new to farming. Having lived for the past 13 years in Edinburgh our life has somewhat changed since moving to West Bastlebog. Previously a Chartered Surveyor and a jobbing tradesman Andrew has always had a keen interest in farming life, agriculture and self sufficiency. As an eight year old he was milking dairy cows single handedly on a Sunday morning because the farmer tended to have a little bit too much the night before to get out of bed. Alexa, a primary school and yoga teacher, has grown up with a love of horses and now runs weekly yoga classes in the village hall.

Our mission is simple. Work hard and love what we do. And we really do. At the heart of it lies the desire to be natural with the best animal welfare possible and 100% naturally grown produce; no chemicals, drugs only where absolutely essential , free to forage environments, regular rotation, natural remedies and mothers allowed to mother their young. All which we believe leads to tasty, nutritional, sustainable produce while positively contributing to our local eco-system.

Visiting Scotland is likely already on (or has been confidently ticked off) your bucket list, but how about staying in a hand-crafted yurt? Here's your chance to do both. Ellie and Scott, two passionate designers with an eye for interiors, have created a wild, natural little haven, steeped in Arthurian legend. Rumour has it this off-grid retreat is next to the valley of Saint Mungo, and it was Saint Mungo who encouraged Merlin to convert to Christianity. Wizards and legends lead you to Esk and its very own magical qualities. In this place of tranquillity and healing lies a wild, luscious dwelling surrounded by ancient redwood trees bordering the renowned Dawyck Botanic Garden, where you'll want to sit on your very own decking with a coffee in hand and listen to the sweet songs of the Mistle Thrushes.Esk Yurt is the result of a true labour of love. It is an insulated, 16-foot Mongolian style yurt designed with all-weather conditions in mind. The yurt sleeps two with a comfy double bed. Inside is a gas hob for your cooking, although Ellie requests no meat to be cooked inside the yurt, given that it is a healing Ahimsa space used for holistic therapies in between stays — so make sure you perfect your veggie risotto before arriving! Guests are also provided with a wood burning stove to stay cosy in those winter months. Filtered water is provided from their underground well and accompanying your yurt there's a private bathroom with a hand pump shower and composting toilet. Don your guest robes and stroll over to the wildflower meadow before reading by candlelight in bed.Esk Yurt is the perfect base camp for all that this area of bonnie Scotland has to offer. Walk just five minutes and you'll come across the perfect wild swimming spot on the River Tweed. Dawyck Botanic Gardens, particularly known for its heritage trees, is a short walk away where there is a cafe to suit your morning croissant needs. The historic market town of Peebles is a 15-minute drive away with a selection of quaint bars and restaurants, or if you're feeling bold, head to Biggar Adventure for an afternoon of rock climbing and archery, before heading back to your yurt to soak in the magic.
