A fair comparison for UK B&B and small hotel owners
Last updated: May 2026
If you're running a B&B, guesthouse or small hotel in the UK and you're researching booking software, Beds24 probably came up. They've been around since the early 2000s and they're known for being feature-dense and powerful.
I run HolidayFox, so this isn't a neutral page. But I'll try to be honest about it, because if you read this and decide Beds24 is the better fit, that's a perfectly reasonable conclusion.
Beds24 is a hosted property management system founded in 2006, headquartered in Germany but with a strong UK customer base. They serve B&Bs, guesthouses, small hotels, hostels and vacation rentals globally.
Their reputation in the market is "you can do anything with it, but you might need to read the manual." It's built for operators who want fine-grained control over rates, rules, channels and integrations, and who don't mind spending time configuring those.
Things Beds24 genuinely does well:
If your priority is "I want maximum control and configurability, and I'm willing to invest the time to learn the system," Beds24 is a credible choice.
HolidayFox is a WordPress-native booking widget plus a booking management back-office. We're UK-focused. We don't build the website or replace your front end; we live inside the WordPress site you already have, or the one you build yourself.
Compared to Beds24, the philosophical difference is significant: Beds24 gives you a maximally flexible toolbox and expects you to configure it. HolidayFox gives you the shortest path from "listed on Booking.com" to "taking direct bookings on your own site, with no commission", with Candice on our team handling the setup in 5 working days.
The second meaningful difference is what each company leads with. Beds24's pitch is configure everything, integrate everywhere. HolidayFox's pitch is take direct bookings on your own site, away from OTA commission. Same software category; different worldviews.
If your business currently lives on Booking.com and you want a simple way to start taking direct bookings on your own website without learning a complex PMS, HolidayFox is probably the lighter lift. If you're an operator who enjoys digging into configuration screens to wring every last ounce of optimisation out of your tooling, Beds24 will give you more rope.
| Capability | HolidayFox | Beds24 |
|---|---|---|
| Where the booking engine lives | Your WordPress site (plugin) | Beds24's hosted platform |
| Setup complexity | Candice sets you up in 5 working days | Self-service; substantial configuration to get going |
| Channel manager breadth | Major OTAs supported; focus is direct bookings | Very wide: one of the broadest in the market |
| Configurability | Sensible defaults; less surface area | Extremely high; almost every behaviour configurable |
| Multi-property | Yes | Yes |
| Dynamic pricing | Yes | Yes (very granular) |
| Deposit + balance | Yes (UK-tuned) | Yes |
| Group bookings | Yes | Yes, with strong rules engine |
| Guest comms automation | Yes | Yes |
| API + webhooks | Roadmap | Yes, mature |
| UK-specific tax (VAT margin scheme) | Native | Configurable, not native |
| Onboarding | White-glove: Candice handles setup | Self-service with documentation |
| Switch-out risk | Your WordPress site stays; you keep your domain, design, SEO | You lose your booking page when you stop paying |
The shorthand: HolidayFox is the option for operators who want simple, fast, owned. Beds24 is the option for operators who want maximally configurable.
Beds24 has a tiered model with a low-cost starter plan and paid tiers for higher unit counts and additional features. Their entry price is one of the lowest in the PMS market.
HolidayFox is subscription-based, priced by units / rooms. We're typically a bit more expensive than Beds24's starter tier but bundle in the white-glove setup, which Beds24 doesn't offer. Both will quote you directly, and if you want a straight answer on whether the price works for your business, the 15-minute call with Hannah is the fastest way to find out.
