The town of Dorchester lies 8 miles inland from the coastal town of Weymouth and is well worth a visit if you are exploring the area. The past meets the present here, with some of Englands best preserved Roman ruins standing right next door to a bustling high street. Europes largest Iron Age hill fort - Maiden Castle - is just two miles outside the town.
For the younger ones there are some great family attractions, including the Teddy Bear Museum, Kingston Animal Park and the Dinosaur Museum. The slightly older ones will be top of the class at school if they are studying ancient Egypt, with a trip to the fascinating Tutankhamun exhibition.
The countryside provides plenty to do -quad biking, archery and even axe throwing are on offer here or hire a bike and explore the miles of cycling trails that surround Dorchester; on the Dorset Jubilee Footpath you can take in the stunning scenery and wildlife.
Poundbury is just around the corner too; Dorchesters urban extension created principally by the Prince of Wales and is really worth a look. If the kids need need encouragement to visit, there's a small chocolate factory -The House of Dorchester - to check out too!
A fantastic selection of hotels and cottages and many places to eat and drink make Dorchester the perfect base to visit Dorset.
