Holyrood Farm Campsite

Welcome to Happyard at Bride Valley Farm, Higher Kingston Russell near Dorchester — an off-grid eco farm and alpaca centre deep in the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Licence 8213; hosted by Tina Hardiman.

It’s all about animals and the countryside here. A herd of friendly woolly alpacas call Happyard home, alongside horses, ponies, guinea pigs and more. Guests can meet the herd, book guided alpaca walks (lesson, walk, feed and light refreshments — picnic welcome), shorter meet-and-greets aimed at younger children, or bookable alpaca therapy sessions (up to two people, up to three hours in a quiet paddock). Some feeding/meet activities are free for campers on set weekdays — book with Tina on the number in your confirmation. Walks, parties and therapy are typically bookable extras.

The camping field is roomy and rural, with green views toward the Hardy Monument. Pitch your own tent or trailer tent on non-electric grass (no touring caravans or motorhomes), or stay in a pre-erected 5m bell tent — choose a basic shell or the cozy set-up with airbeds, firepit kit, camping stove and welcome pack. Firepits and barbecues are allowed when weather permits (never inside hired tents). One gazebo/awning and picnic space by the pitch keep outdoor living easy.

Facilities are intentionally simple and shared: toilets (including portaloos), showers and a washing-up area in the main yard. Communal plates, cups and cutlery are usually available at the washing-up area for glampers. Because Happyard is fully off-grid, please bring drinking water and a strong torch — parts of the field are unlit after dark. Parking is by your pitch (two cars included on seeded rates).

You’re brilliantly placed for Dorset days out: Bridport about 10–13 minutes, Dorchester ~15 minutes, Weymouth ~25 minutes, and Jurassic Coast favourites Charmouth, Lyme Regis and West Bay within roughly 30–35 minutes. Abbotsbury Swannery and the Cerne Abbas Giant are nearby; the site sits just after Winterbourne Abbas, minutes from the A35 — a handy overnight stop en route to Devon or Cornwall.

Season typically runs early April to end of August (confirm current-year dates with Tina). Teachers, frontline staff and DT2 residents may qualify for a direct-book discount — ask Tina with ID. Quiet, family-friendly farm camping with real animal encounters rather than a holiday-park atmosphere.

Off-grid eco alpaca farm campsite in the Dorset AONB near Dorchester — tent pitches and 5m bell tents, animal meets, Hardy Monument views.

Imagine Glamping

Only in its third year of running, you’d be mistaken for thinking that lovely Donkey Down campsite had been nestled into the Dorset Coastline for years. Set on a gently sloping site on the Jurassic Inland Coast path, just above the charming village of Sutton Poyntz, Donkey Down is part of a working organic livestock farm. It’s tents only here, and has the festival feel of a pop-up campsite but the calm vibe of back to nature wild camping. If you don’t want to bring your own tent, they have some Bell Tents for hire.

Choose your own pitch anywhere on the grassy field (don’t panic - there are enough awesome views to go around), and set up your tent looking over Weymouth Bay or the rolling Dorset countryside; they limit the number of pitches, so there is plenty of open space for everyone. No electricity means that dark starry nights are on the cards for those evenings around the campfire. There are eco toilets and a block of six shower cubicles, drinking water is available and there are also sinks for washing up and a small onsite shop selling essentials.

The South Dorset Ridgeway passes through Donkey Down, a 17-mile ancient track running along the south coast. This ridge of high land has been used for thousands of years by people and several Stone Age burial mounds can be seen along here, one in Donkey Down itself. The Ridgeway is considered as important as Stonehenge for the scale of monuments and what they tell us about Neolithic life, but remains one of Dorsets best kept secrets!

The location of Donkey Down is part of its brilliance. Walkers are in for an absolute treat, with hiking routes all along the coast to the famous White Horse at Osmington and beyond. Family-friendly Weymouth beach is a 10-minute drive away, boasting lovely shallow waters, golden sands, donkey rides, and a small amusement park. Weymouth harbour is a great place to watch the boats come in, scoff some delicious fresh fish and chips, and even do a spot of crabbing off the side.

Water Sports enthusiasts will love Bowleaze Cove and Chesil Beach (the bit between Weymouth and Portland) for awesome surfing, kitesurfing, kayaking, and paddleboarding. Sandworld, the most underrated attraction on the south coast (in my humble opinion), lies on the other side of Weymouth at Lodmoor Nature reserve. Run by the same family of sculptors for years, this place has giant sand sculptures of everyone from Arnold Schwarzenegger to Scooby Doo and it is gobsmacking. Also at Lodmoor is a Sealife centre and a miniature train, so you can take a picnic and make a day of it. Further afield, Abbotsbury Gardens, Bridport, West Bay, Dorchester and Portland Bill lighthouse are all a good trip out if you have time.

It is worth booking a few nights at Donkey Down to fully appreciate the amazing Jurassic coast; you will not run out of things to do. And after a busy day, Donkey Down campsite is the perfect place to retreat to - the campers who have stayed at this new campsite have only amazing things to say about it. This gem is only open for 28 days (from 27th May until 19th June in 2022) so don’t miss out!

Donkey Down

New for 2020, Donkey Down is situated on the South Dorset Ridgeway. A peaceful 10 acre site enjoying stunning views over Weymouth Bay, Portland and the surrounding countryside. A gently sloping site situated on the Jurassic Inland Coast Path. Donkey Down is part of a working organic farm and home to a neolithic tumulus, there are rare flora and fauna to be found.

Donkey Down Campsite

Just three miles from the Jurassic Coast, and surrounded by some of Dorset's most spectacular hills, our 600-acre family farm is a peaceful haven for walkers, campers and wildlife lovers.

Firepits (with cooking grill) provided; home-grown firewood & local charcoal available to buy. Please do not use disposable barbecues.

Our family has been custodians of this land for seven decades; my grandfather established a dairy here in the 1950s and cows have long been part of the landscape in the Marshwood Vale, being ideal for growing grass. But in 2021 we took the difficult decision to move out of dairy farming and explore a new more environmental approach of managing the land.

Working with local organisations such as Dorset Wildlife Trust and being mindful of climate change, the environment and biodiversity, we are rethinking how we farm. We will be minimising the use of the plough in order to keep carbon in the ground, and managing our crop rotation and livestock grazing to improve the health of our soil.

Wildlife will be encouraged to thrive in our traditional hedgerows, and we'll be fully embracing the government's new countryside stewardship schemes.
We look forward to welcoming you to our quiet corner of West Dorset, and hope to offer you a unique connection to farming, the landscape, and nature.

Coppet Hill

Glamping here enjoys stunning views with Weymouth Bay and Chesil Beach in one direction, Hardy's Monument in another direction and beautiful rolling hills and fields in every direction.Whether you are looking for a romantic getaway or a family holiday, it's ideal for a stress free getaway in the heart of nature. The bell tents are located on Shilvington Barn Campsite. Each bell tent has a double bed and a single bed. An additional fold out bed (Futon) can be added if needed. The tents are individually decorated, with full moon mats and rugs for additional comfort.

The Trooper Inn has been at the heart of Stourton Caundle village life for hundreds of years.
Our independent, family-run pub is popular with locals and visitors alike – and dogs and horses too!

We became the proud new owners of The Trooper Inn in December 2019.
During the first lockdown, we made use of the time by expanding the outdoor seating area and giving the pub a fresh look, while retaining its charming atmosphere.
We now have a beautiful courtyard to the rear of the pub and an expanded beer garden to the side, both with marquees, as well as the seating to the front where you can watch the world go by – tractors, dog-walkers and may be a car.

Steeped in history, in the heart of the Blackmore Vale, this is a wonderful region to explore and we are close to the ancient market towns of Sherborne and Sturminster Newton and the borders of Somerset and Wiltshire.

You won't be able to choose your exact spot in advance as we rotate pitches to protect the ground but you can guarantee your pitch will be next to some water, be it the lake or the stream. Whilst you can't swim in the lake, you can fish, and if you need to get your feet wet then the Sturkel chalk stream is great for dipping your toes in and splashing about.
